Dear District Historians and Post Historians,

As we prepare for the 2024 Department of Virginia’s History Contest, I am providing the final details on your submission process, along with the judging procedures:

  1. Hard-copy Post History Books are to be submitted NLT the Historian Meeting during the Department Convention in July. Please mark your calendars and ensure all submissions are ready for this meeting.
  2. Please note that digital submissions will not be accepted this year due to a lack of direction from the National level at the beginning of the year. I am working on establishing guidelines for digital submissions for next year’s contest, to be finalized after the National Fall Conference in October 2024.
  3. A panel of non-competing judges will be selected from our membership for transparency and fairness. Judging will commence immediately after the Historian Meeting, with winners announced at the general session on Saturday during the Department Convention.
  4. To assist in preparing your Post History Books, I have attached the Post History Book training from the Fall Conference and relevant sections from the American Legion’s Officer’s Guide and Manual of Ceremonies.
  5. Each entry in the Department Competition must include a completed certification form (attached). This form is crucial for accurate judging and must be submitted with each entry at the Historian Meeting.
  6. This year, there will only be a first-place prize awarded in both the narrative and scrapbook categories. Despite this change, I am confident in the high quality of submissions.
