American Legion Family Members,
Every once in a while there is a disaster that truly impacts millions of people.
We need our families the most during life’s greatest challenges. Nowhere is this more apparent than in Texas and the Gulf Coast right now. We feel that the ongoing historic flooding and hurricane damage is one of those events. As members of the largest Veterans Service Organization, we feel the call to help in times of need and many of you have been contacting us by phone, email, and through social media eager to help.
Heavy rain and severe flooding is ravaging Texas and the Gulf Coast in the wake of Harvey, a category 4 hurricane that is affecting more than six million people, including American Legion Family members. And the Legion is ready to assist those in need.
The American Legion’s National Emergency Fund (NEF) provides immediate financial assistance to Legion Family members and posts affected by natural disasters such as tornadoes, hurricanes, wildfires and flooding. The fund provides up to $3,000 for qualified Legion Family members and up to $10,000 for posts. The NEF covers expenses such as temporary housing, food, water, clothing and other daily household items.
In order to qualify for an NEF grant, an applicant must:
- Have been displaced from his or her primary residence due to a declared natural disaster.
- Provide copies of receipts of items required to meet immediate needs, such as temporary housing, food, water, clothing, diapers, etc.
- Be an active member of the Legion at the time of the disaster.
We invite you to join us in providing additional contributions to assist. Please send a check, noting in the memo line “Harvey Flood.” You can also donate by Credit Card by calling Department Headquarters (804)- 353-6606 and speaking to Ms. Linda Hardwick (office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.). We would like to combine all donations and present them in four (4) weeks. Please make your donation prior to October 1st, 2017.
Thank you in advance for your contributions to assist our American Legion Family Members in the affected areas of Hurricane Harvey. We will keep you updated on our progress and the amount sent in October.
