All,

Your help is needed to locate a spouse of a KIA who would benefit from a Real Property Tax Exemption for Spouses of Military Killed in Action. Sure would be nice to get them to a Senate Finance Committee meeting in Richmond at 0900 on Tuesday, 25 February.

JLC 2014-07- That the General Assembly pass a resolution to provide a Real Property Tax Exemption for Spouses of Military Killed in Action, identical to the resolution (HJ551) passed by the 2013 General Assembly, and that the Governor and General Assembly enact legislation to place a referendum on the ballot for the November 4, 2014 general election.

HB 46(Ramadan) and HJ 8 (Ramadan) were both approved by full House. In the Senate they were referred to the Privileges and Election Committee where they were approved and then referred to the Senate Finance Committee. Previously SJ 8 (Black) which covers the same issue was also approved by the Senate P&E and referred to the Senate Finance Committee where it was essentially killed when they continued it to 2015.

The Senate Finance Committee will likely hear and vote on the HB 46 and HJ 8 at their meeting at 0900 on Tuesday, 25 February. If they follow the same action and continue to 2015 then we are dead in the water for several years as this is a constitutional amendment issue that must be passed with the same language in two General Assemblies.
If you have a name, address, and phone number of a spouse of a KIA who would be willing to appear at the committee hearing please give me a call.
