2022-2023 POW/MIA Sub-Committee

Chairman: Mike Mixon (24)

Members: John Hess (290), Tom Hart (147), Millie Hampton (82), Claude D. Davis, Jr. (176)

The POW/MIA Sub-Committee is the Department’s focal point for POW/MIA affairs.  The Sub-Committee leads the Department-wide initiative to increase POW/MIA awareness by encouraging Posts to fly the POW/MIA flag and convene POW/MIA recognition ceremonies.  Furthermore, the Sub-Committee will maintain visibility of current POW/MIA affairs by monitoring news releases from the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) and the National League of POW/MIA Families.

National POW/MIA Recognition Day was established in 1979 through a proclamation signed by President Jimmy Carter. Since then, each subsequent president has issued an annual proclamation commemorating the third Friday in September as National POW/MIA Recognition Day. In addition to the national-level ceremony, observances of National POW/MIA Recognition Day are held across the country on military installations, ships at sea, state capitols, schools and Veterans’ facilities. No matter where they are held, these National POW/MIA Recognition Day ceremonies share the common purpose of honoring those who were held captive and returned, as well as those who remain missing.

Use the Department Calendar to see the specific dates for each year. We hope you will find an event in your area to participate in, and if you don’t find one, maybe you could help lead the effort in your community for this special day.
