PACKAGES FOR THE MILITARY
The veterans of American Legion Post 39 Williamsburg have launched a new initiative named: “Operation: Military Overseas Morale”. The program is designed to help bolster the morale of those active duty military serving in far-away places. Bill White, post commander, explains: “We’re sending packages of comfort food and necessities to two forward outposts right now. We want them to know they are not forgotten by those of us at home.”
“Operation MOM, as it is affectionately known, consists of collecting from Post 39 Members, such items as: packaged candy, granola bars, beef jerky, lip balm, travel size packages of Kleenex, shampoo, tooth paste, soap, deodorant, crossword puzzles, Sudoku books, Readers Digests, gum and mints, etc. Post 39 is also self-funding purchases of these materials as well.
Commander White reports: We’ve had a great response from the troops: Katie Weisbacher onboard the USS Bonhomme Richard LHD 6 and Captain Kathryn Yates, USN, and LTC Jesse Cruz, USA, in Afghanistan. As Captain Yates relayed: “I never realized how Spartan conditions were, and how much care packages meant to the troops. I know now from personal experience that the packages are a high boost to morale”.
Post 39 invites the greater Williamsburg community to join us in contributing items to this worthwhile effort. “Drop-off boxes” have been established at Rocco’s Smokehouse Grill, 207 ByPass Rd and The Daily Donut, 1425 Richmond Rd.
